It has been 98 years since the Doom of Valyria, which resulted in the loss of much of Valyria's knowledge of magic and dragonlore. Start date: The Bleeding Years (January 1, 7996) I would probably consider using "Years since the foundation of ", if those dates were known. I don't know if it's actually mentioned as such anywhere, but, for lack of anything better, using the Doom of Valyria as the start of a new era makes sense to me. This would be 98 years before this game starts, 100 years before the Aegon's Landing bookmark, and approximately 8000 years after the construction of the Wall, the beginning of the Sworn Brotherhood of the Night's Watch, and various other events marking the end of the legendary Long Night.
GAME OF THRONES STEPSTONES MOD
Years will also be as according to the mod (I'm not sure what would have marked the beginning of records 7996 years before the game starts).įor sake of "authenticity", I'm going to arbitrarily set the date of the Doom of Valyria as January 1, 7898. It's possible Westeros (or at least the Faith of the Seven) runs on some kind of lunar calendar, but for sake of convenience I'm probably going to just use the months, with names from our world, given in the mod.
GAME OF THRONES STEPSTONES SERIES
The treatment of timekeeping given in the series is probably not inappropriate for a pseudo-medieval setting where not every character is a literate scholar with access to the Internet, but for an After-Action Report it poses some difficulty (particularly when, as of the start of the game, Aegon's Landing is still 2 years in the future, and might not happen). Since this is going to be an alternate history, I'm somewhat leery of including spoiler warnings - there may well be spoilers for people who aren't ardent ASoIaF/Game of Thrones fans, but these are, more than likely, going to be spoilers in the sense of "Here's what could have happened in an alternate timeline", rather than "here's what's going to happen, as you would know if you had read the books or watched the latest/next season of the HBO show."Ī note on Westerosi timekeeping: Other than dating the years from Aegon's Landing, and the occasional mention of moon phases and "turns", the months are never given a name that I'm aware of. whatever random things happen in this game. My goal for this AAR is to play from the earliest available start date (approximately 96 years after the Doom of Valyria and approximately 2 years before Aegon's Conquest) to approximately 300 years after Aegon's Landing (better known as the "present", as of A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons), mainly to see what differs between the known history of the books (Aegon the Conqueror, the reign of the Targaryens, their replacement by Robert Baratheon and "his" sons Joffrey and Tommen, etc.) and. Martin is known to not be a fan of fan fiction, but ignoring that, I enjoyed playing some 60 years as Aurane Waters and his descendants in the Game of Thrones mod earlier this year.
